Benefit for Tuli Kupferberg

Posted on 07 January 2010 by Andy Horwitz

Tuli Kupferberg

Tuli Kupferberg, the influential songwriter who co-founded the Fugs, suffered two strokes, in April and September 2009, which left him blind, confined to his apartment and in need of 24-hour care. He is recovering well—he is able to speak clearly—but has overwhelming medical expenses not covered by Medicare or the very modest publishing/royalties income he earns at the age of 86. A number of his friends and admirers are coming to his aid by performing in a benefit concert produced by Hal Willner, including his fellow Fugs, John Kruth and an all-star band, Lou Reed, Sonic Youth, Pete Stampfel, John Zorn and others who will be announced soon.

A Benefit for Tuli Kupferberg
Produced by Hal Willner
Friday, January 22 at7:30PM

Party with The Wooster Group

Posted on 16 April 2009 by Andy Horwitz

After the April 24 performance of LA DIDONE there will be a massive benefit party for the Wooster Group. RAWK!!!!

FISCHERSPOONER DJ SET will be from 10pm-2am. There’s gonna be free booze and some munchies. In line with the stripped down party atmosphere are the ticket prices: $50 for the party only, $100 to see that show that night and come to the party, $150 to get the best seats at the show and come to the party. There’s not going to be an auction,  raffle or probably even speeches. (RADICAL BENEFIT IDEA! YAY!) The idea is to come and celebrate our run of LA DIDONE with the entire LA DIDONE company (including your favorite Wooster Group members and associates). Come hobnob with the Woosterians!

BUY TICKETS HERE.

Andy’s Haunted Birthday & Benefit Party

Posted on 16 October 2008 by Andy Horwitz

I don’t know, maybe it is the high-stakes election, maybe it is the fact that Judith Malina is still blowing people’s minds advocating for the beautiful anarchist revolution and Paradise Now! after all these years (I need to go see that show!!) maybe it is the mix of terror, frustration, futility, fatalism and schadenfreude that is the economy, maybe it is that I’ve had a cold for four days and I’m exhausted and feeling kinda crummy. Maybe it is because my last two birthdays sucked huge donkey junk. Maybe it is because as I reach the event horizon from which I can see my own eventual mortality, I want, more than anything, to be transformed. And I want you to transform with me. I want us all to take this spaceship to the next level and evolve. I know we can do it, I just know we can. We have to.

So come with me to celebrate another trip around the sun, welcome the ghosts of past and future (because you know that there are backwards-ghosts don’t you?) to breach the space-time continuum and join with us in a timeless invocation of endless possibility.

I don’t know how we’re going to do this so bring your imagination and a costume and  I think there’s gonna be cake. My trusty support team tells me there will be cake. Bring your best self, come dressed as what you fear most and let’s exorcise fear and move forward with hope, conviction and vision.  Peace. Dig it? Amen.

Andy's Haunted Birthday Invitation

This is my happening and its freaking me out!

This is not only a birthday party but a BENEFIT PARTY and while donations are not required, they are gratefully accepted. If you have enjoyed reading Culturebot for the past five years (as of December!), if you support the work that we’re doing – and hope to be doing – at IRT; if you LOVE ME then SHOW ME! (Just Kidding. Kind of.) Seriously – I hope you’ll come and celebrate with me, I also hope that those of you who are in a position to donate, will. And if you are a big-deal philanthropist or business tycoon or venture capitalist looking to make a difference, please don’t hesitate to contact me. We’ve got big dreams and lots of talent, all we need is a capital infusion. Where it counts.

If you can’t come to the party, you can still give online using PAYPAL for Culturebot or via Google for IRT.

Issue Project Room Benefit Thursday

Posted on 17 September 2008 by Andy Horwitz

This looks like it’ll be fantastic!! Check this out:

Brooklyn, NY – Phillips de Pury & Company will host an auction and cocktail reception benefiting ISSUE Project Room the evening of Thursday, September 18, 2008. Now in its fifth year, ISSUE Project Room is one of New York City’s premier destinations for experimental culture and avant-garde performing arts. Dedicated to the artist, with a particular focus on those whose work moves social intellect forward through experiment and investigation, ISSUE serves not only to expose audiences to groundbreaking work, but also to foster an extended community dialogue about art and culture.

Chaired by ISSUE board member Robert Longo, the evening will feature paintings, drawings, photographs, new media, and sculptures from more than 70 prominent artists including Longo, Yoko Ono, Cindy Sherman, Christian Marclay, Tony Oursler, E.V. Day, Donald Baechler, Carolee Schneemann, Thurston Moore, Jen Liu and Assume Vivid Astro Focus with prices ranging from $500 to $250,000.

Works of note include “Spanish Blood”, a 58 x 48 inches charcoal on paper from Robert Longo’s Wave Series (attached), a composite of Vito Acconci drawings (7/8 mat-board strips, varying in height and length with a total width of 10 feet), a Yoko Ono “I Love U” piece (white wood board with white canvas and plexi board) and a large Donald Baechler painting (attached) created specifically for the auction – “Skull”, Gesso, Flasche and paper collage on paper, 40×40 inches.

Acclaimed avant-garde musicians including Marc Ribot, Duane Pitre and Ha-Yang Kim will play a handful of short performances throughout the evening.

“We are grateful for the support of Phillips de Pury & Company and are continuously amazed by the generosity that the artistic community has bestowed upon ISSUE Project Room for this amazing endeavor,” says ISSUE’s Founder & Artistic Director, Suzanne Fiol. “The works submitted make for a significant and truly convergent collection with pieces from artists and musicians alike, rooted in the spirit of keeping the core of experimental culture here in New York City.”

Auction proceeds will go towards ISSUE’s capital campaign, which aims to raise $1.5 million for dramatic renovations and reconstruction of their future home at 110 Livingston Street, an architecturally significant (McKim, Mead & White, 1925) and stunningly beautiful 4800 square foot performance space located in the former New York City Department of Education headquarters. Located in downtown Brooklyn at the nexus of several thriving performing arts communities, this new space will not only offer dynamic programs to the public, but will also foster both established and emerging artists, giving them the opportunity to perform for an expanded variety of audiences.

South African fare and hors d’oeuvres will be graciously provided by Brooklyn’s Madiba restaurant and SchoolHouse Kitchen.
